Believe the Bible – Is it Only Nice-Sounding Words?

Believe the Bible

Do we believe the Bible? It says some amazing things about the believer’s life. Could they be true?

Let’s explore some Bible references, some wisdom from the Bible. I will share a set of verses, verses that we have all read or heard for your consideration. Then, let’s take some time to make a decision about our belief in the Bible.

Is it true?

Let’s ask us the following questions:

  • Are these words true? Do they say something to me?
  • Do we think they aren’t true because we don’t see evidence in our life?
  • What do we feel about these words?

Let’s look at a few short passages.

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

So there is a thief who wants to ruin our lives and the lives of those we care about? Hmmm…John 10:10 is a direct quote from Jesus. Now, do we believe it? What does it mean to my life? Your life?

Jesus said that He came to give us an abundant life – more than enough. Again, is this true for you? If it isn’t, was Jesus lying or are we somehow not in alignment with scripture? What can we do to make this real in our lives?

Next, John 16:24 “Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

Our joy full? Really? When was the last we felt full of joy? Not happiness which is temporary and dependent on circumstances. But, joy, which is long lasting and independent of circumstances.

Could we be asking amiss? Jesus qualified that truth with a previous statement. “Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name He will give you.”

Ah, so there is a key. Ask in the name of Jesus, not as a formula, but as if Jesus were asking the Father. Now that might change the way we pray. What would Jesus ask His Father for?

Another verse – 1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Victory? Opposite of losing. Not overwhelmed by life. Victory! Could this be true? What about when our culture changes so it is intolerant of Christianity? Does it have timely advice? What about when our child becomes a drug addict or alcoholic? What about when we lose our job? Victory in the middle of the storm?

The Word says that God gives us victory. Could it be true? Do we want victory?

There must be a life that can be lived while we live this temporal life. Focus on your Lord as you live your life. Be aware of His presence and maintain constant communication with Him as you go about your life.

Another verse – 2 Corinthians 2:14 “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.”

Always? Always?

That’s what it says. So if we aren’t walking in triumph, what is wrong?

Does what we read describe our lives?

Are we walking with Him? Romans 8:1 Are we listening to Him? Isaiah 65:12 Have we taken on His yoke? Matthew 11:29

Do we base our faith on what we see in our lives as evidence for truth, or is the Bible truth, even if it contradicts what we see?  Let’s take the word at face value and step out in faith and believe it.

Let’s take a look at the Bible as words of life, not just words that make for a good sermon. We can hear the word of God and go home to live our lives apart from Him, lives that have no resemblance to what the Bible says, or we can take the words as truth allowing them to be fruitful in our lives.

Heavenly Father, may we take You at Your word even when it doesn’t make common sense. Help us to see that You are above our common sense. May our faith please You.
