Joy is not something God gives us as far as I can tell. In Galatians 5:22 it is in the list of fruit of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit has control of our wills leading us to obedience it is His fruit produced through us.

. We are a branch, right? John 15 What is the purpose of a branch of an apple tree? To be a place for apples to grow as the sap from the roots and trunk flows through the branch.

So it is with us. It is fruit. Joy is fruit. It is evidence of the life in us.

It is not our efforts which are carnal. They are enmity with God.

It is evidence. Rather like a trial in court. They must have evidence. Joy is the evidence of the life of the Holy Spirit being lived out through us.
