Identity – How it Shapes Your Day

Identity – How it Shapes Your Day

Identity

Let me share with you what I discovered about my new identity. Like many born-again believers, I thought I was essentially the same person just saved and forgiven. Then it was up to me to live the Christian life the best I could and maybe over time I would develop a better character. I didn’t understand that I wasn’t the same person I was before my new birth, that all was new. My past influenced my life.

Now I know that I have a new identity:

  1. I am the Lord’s daughter. That is my identity. I am not a parent, wife, sister, etc. First of all, I am His child. I am “His”. He has placed me in His kingdom. Colossians 1:9-14
  2. I have been bought by His shed blood. He paid the price for my redemption. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  3. I have a new Identity and it is not:
    1. Who I was before my new birth
    2. Who I was in high school
    3. Who I was last year
    4. Who I am in the middle of my siblings
    5. Who I am in my workplace
  4. If I get my identity from the roles I play I will be limiting God. I will be focused on being a good mom, student, etc. and lose sight that I am, essentially God’s. My focus will be skewed. I will be seduced into performance again, being the best mom, sister, employee, etc. I can be.
  5. I am a branch connected to the vine, Jesus Christ, receiving all I need from Him by allowing His life (sap) to flow through me. John 15:1-5
  6. I am the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19
  7. A core understanding of my identity is foundational, anchoring me and stabilizing my life.
  8. I will be able to fulfill any role during the day with peace. Whatever I am called upon to do can be done without stress because I am allowing Christ to deal with life for me. Whatever storm surrounds me, I am anchored. Whatever I pass through, however long it takes, I am secure. Psalms 46:1-3

What about you? Do you know who you are deep inside? Not the roles you play or who others say you are, but who you are in Christ as a born-again person.

Do you know that you will live out who you believe you are? I pray that your faith will make real what God says about you and free you to be a new person.

Words to light your path

Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ…NKJV

Galatians 4:6-7 And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. NLT

Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, who acts for the one who waits for Him. NKJV

Father God, You have provided a new identity for each of us at our new birth. Help us to study Your word and learn about our new identity.
